7 of the best indoor house plants to purify your home

Adding plants to your home is proven to be a mood booster. Being surrounded by nature can literally make you happier. But you might not know that it can also make you healthier.

As homes, offices and other buildings become more airtight thanks to new technology, less air is circulating. This means the more time we spend indoors, the more chemicals and toxins we breathe in.

All plants help purify the air around them by removing carbon dioxide and other toxins and producing oxygen. But recently, scientists have found that some plants are better at clearing the air than others.

If you want to breathe some life into a closed space and freshen up the air, you don’t need an expensive air purifier that uses a ton of electricity and makes an annoying noise; you need one of these plants.

Spider Plant

Easy to maintain and hard to kill, spider plants are a popular choice because they effectively remove carbon monoxide. Keep on near utilities like your washer and dryer to help filter out nasty chemicals and gasses. They are also suitable for pet-owners as they are one of a few non-toxic plants.

Bamboo Palm

Bamboo palms are perfect for a slightly darker room that still needs a good cleanse. Long and elegant, they are a great focal point and keep the air around them fresh. They are famous for being air-purifying plants and are especially good for places with varnish wood floors as formaldehyde is usually an ingredient in floor varnish.

Boston Fern

All ferns are generally good at purifying air, but the Boston fern is particularly effective. The long leaves help remove chemicals and toxins from the surrounding area, breaking them down effectively in its roots. They thrive in damp environments, making them a great addition to a bathroom.

Flamingo Lily

If you want something with a bit more colour, this is for you. The bright leaves filter the air and keep the atmosphere clean. According to the NASA Clean Air Study, they can help with lots of common chemicals such as formaldehyde, ammonia, toluene and xylene. They are pretty tough to kill, so they are ideal for beginners.
